What are the types of rosacea?

Erythemato-telangiectatic (or vascular)

  • occasional and temporary facial redness
  • facial edema (swelling)
  • telangiectasias (small visible vessels)
  • burning sensation
  • dry skin

Papulopustular

  • persistent redness
  • buttons
  • telangiectasias (small visible vessels)
  • burning sensation

Phymatous (or sebaceous hyperplasia)

  • thickening of the skin
  • buttons
  • pore dilation
  • rough skin
  • permanent redness of the nose, cheeks, chin, forehead and eyelids

Ocular

  • in 50% of people with rosacea
  • tearing and/or dryness
  • feeling of foreign bodies in the eye and burning
  • sensitivity to light and blurred vision
  • visible vessels in the eyes

Granulomatous

  • rare variant
  • hard yellow, brown and red buttons
  • lesions on the eyelids
  • not necessarily other signs of rosacea
